Welcome to Southern Pines Golf Club!
The magic of Donald Ross lives here at Southern Pines Golf Club. The natural terrain that reveals each hole inspires the traditionalist and rewards the imaginative shot maker. All ability levels are accomodated with the diverse course conditions. By matching the slopes of the putting surfaces with the challenging green speeds, the play of the greens demand pace as well as direction for the successful putt.

A few months ago I sent you an email enquiring on the condition of the course. Your answer to me was….it will be the best course you play on your golf trip. On April 6th we played SPGC and I must say it was in outstanding condition. The layout is superb with all the elevation changes and has all the characteristics of a Donald Ross layout. It truly is a gem. Hats off to you and your staff for the fine course conditioning and also for your honest and accurate evaluation. Southern Pines will be a “must play” on our next trip to Pinehurst.

Golf Course Review – Southern Pines Golf Club
Part of Doug Gelbert’s adventure in Golf Courses
Southern Pines, North Carolina
One would like to believe that if pioneer golf course architect Donald Ross was around today, Southern Pines Golf Club is where he would be playing most of his golf. Yes, Pinehurst #2, Mid Pines and Pine Needles are his masterpieces but they are centerpieces of fancy resorts. Ross, the son of a stonemason, hailed from Dornoch, Scotland where the daily fee golfer is greeted by an unpretentious clubhouse just steps away from a world class golf experience with unrivaled routing and challenges for every club in the bag.
Southern Pines is very much cut from that that mold. Ross laid out the first nine holes in 1906 with a commission from the town, his third design project in what would become a legacy of some 400 golf courses during a 48-year stay in Pinehurst. In an age when many courses were created by the local pro walking back and forth driving stakes in the turf, Ross took one of the choicest plots of golfing ground in the Sandhills and fashioned a course that flows so naturally up and down the contours that it feels as if the man uncovered a course rather than designed one.

“An ideal golf course is a test for both the expert and the everyday player. It is my goal to bring out of the player the best golf they have in them.” – Donald Ross
A round that lasts more than four and one half hours does not follow Donald Ross’ philosophy that “Golf should be a pleasure not a penance.”
